El transatlántico parte de Nueva York con destino a Escandinavia. Gunilla, una joven melancólica, es una de las tantas pasajeras. El viaje está organizado como una travesía de fiesta permanente que obliga a la tímida y huraña nativa del norte a interactuar con los comensales de la mesa 10, donde conocerá al joven Brunello Nacarelli, estudiante de restauración de obras de arte en Florencia y camarero del transatlántico en la temporada navideña.
